California Legislating TV Sets

flat_panel_tv_loveCalifornia is legislating TVs. All I can say is that I’m glad I don’t live there. I’ve got a big ass TV, and I love it. In fact, I’m going to buy another one before the year is over. So does that mean owners of flat panel TVs will be hated the way SUV owners are? Will I be branded an environment-killer or something like that?

California Is First

Wednesday this week, the Cali state regulators adopted a first of its kind mandate against these big TVs. So these electricity hogs are supposed to be banned from store shelves. Then, beginning in 2011, all new televisions up to 58 inches must be energy efficient. Actually, that’s a good idea. However, in the meantime, I have a feeling the surrounding states will see an increase in sales of the sme.

Loophole

They left a loophole for businesses that sell high-end home-theater TVs. So people who sell monster 58 inchers and larger will still be able to do business, and people with lots of money will still be able to buy them. So who does this regulation hurt? Average people who can now afford a flat panel TV since prices have dropped but who could never afford something 58 inches or bigger.

You Do The Math

California has the most stringent regulations in the country on just about everything. They also have one of the highest costs of living. Oh, and don’t forget that they’re bankrupt. You do the cause and effect relationship math. Then there’s the earthquake reality. Why do people continue living there? I’m surprised there’s not a mass exodus.

Of course, this will have a trickle down effect that’s going to eventually affect everyone from manufacturers (and they’re employees) to residents of other states. In the end, it always ends up hitting the little guy because those with money will always get what they want.

Takeaway Truth

I have mixed emotions about state government telling people what kind of TV they can buy even though I realize the benefits of using less electricity.
