What Makes A Writer

Hold TightLast week I reviewed Hold Tight by Harlan Coben on my other blog.

This weekend, I was re-reading my Authors Guild Bulletin and came across part of an interview with thriller writer Coben whose 18 books include 9 featuring Myron Bolitar as protagonist.

In the interview, Mr. Coben held forth on what is needed to make a person a writer.

There are 3 things that make a person a writer: Inspiration, perspiration and desperation. I’m on page 40 of the next book; Myron hasn’t shown up yet. But you never know. That’s the beauty of getting paid to make stuff up for a living.

Takeaway Truth

All of us who write for a living, and the smaller group of writers who can make a living by making stuff up, will attest to the fact that this can be the best job in the whole world.

Damn right it is. Don’t you love watching your characters come to life? They’ve taken me to some surprising places. :)
