Sad Decline Of Book Stores
I was reading some statistics on declining book sales and saw this tidbit about declining bookstores too.
Peter Applebome of The New York Times was mourning the loss of a local bookstore in his town. He reported some statistics from The American Booksellers Association. Now they are about “1,500 booksellers at 2,500 locations,” but 20 years ago, they were “4,200 at about 5,500 locations.” The independent booksellers have decreased by more than half. How sad since some of my happiest memories are of browsing bookstores.
Takeaway Truth
Independent booksellers who once thrived have been edged out by big chains and Internet retailers. The bottom line for writers is that it’s much harder to make a living at this business now than it was 20 years ago.
